A list of helpful questions parents should always ask potential child care providers.
Important Questions to Ask...
In order to make an informed decision about child care, parents need to educate themselves on the quality and range of services offered by caregivers. It is crucial that all caregivers provide a healthy setting that encourages appropriate emotional, social and intellectual growth. It's up to you, the parent, to find out which center is best equipped to provide child care of a high standard.
Parents should definitely observe caregivers interacting with children before making decisions. Our open door policy gives parents the opportunity to see our program in action and ask whatever questions you may have concerning the GAP program.
It's important to know:
- What training the staff has in infant/toddler development?
- Are activities and schedules compatible with my concept of proper child care?
- Are toys and materials well organized, age-appropriate, clean and readily available for my young one?
- Is this caregiver able to accommodate the special needs of my child, in regards to dietary needs and child-rearing philosophy?
- Does the environment enrich my child's daily experience--is it child-friendly and brightly lit?
- Does this caregiver respect the language, culture and values of my family?
- Does the caregiver enjoy children?
- Am I welcome to drop in at any time?
- Will my child feel good about coming here?
- Is the environment sanitary and safe?
- Is the child care program licensed by the state or local government?
- Is the child care program accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children?
- Are the ratios and group size appropriate for my child's age?
- What is my "gut reaction" as a concerned parent and what is the reaction of my child when introduced into this new environment?
